    Todo documento público expedido en Estados Unidos debe ser notarizado y posteriormente apostillado ante la Secretaría de Estado correspondiente para que surta efecto en Colombia.

    Igualmente, los documentos públicos expedidos en Colombia deben ser notarizados y posteriormente apostillados en la Oficina de Legalizaciones del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores para que surtan efecto en Estados Unidos.

    Este es el caso de los Certificados de Nacimiento, de Defunción, de Matrimonio; Supervivencias por correo, entre otros.

    Se han abierto nuevas instalaciones de apostilla en el Centro Internacional en Bogotá, en la carrera 13 número 26-45 interior 7.

Legalization of Documents According To The Hague Convention (Hague Convention, October 5th, 1961)

As of January 30th, 2001, Colombia is a participant in the 1961 Hague Convention. This Convention abolish the requirement of diplomatic or consular legalization for foreign public documents.

The present Convention shall apply to public documents which have been executed in the territory of one Contracting State and which have to be produced in the territory of another Contracting State.

For the purposes of the present Convention, the following are deemed to be public documents:

  1. Documents emanating from an authority or an official connected with the courts or tribunals of the State, including those emanating from a public prosecutor, a clerk of a court or a process-server ("husier de justice"); administrative documents;
  2. notarial acts:
    1. official certificates which are placed on documents signed by persons in their private capacity, such as official certificates recording the registration of a document of the fact that it was in existence on a certain date and official and notarial authentications of signatures.
  3. However, the present Convention shall NOT apply:
    1. To documents executed by diplomatic or consular agents;
    2. To administrative documents dealing directly with commercial or customs operations."
    3. Acts performed before a Notary Public or other official authority, must be forwarded to the Secretary of State of the corresponding state to be certified according to the Hague Convention with an APOSTILLE.

Quedan Abolidas Legalizaciones

    El Consulado General Central de Colombia en San Francisco le informa a la comunidad colombiana residente en su jurisdicción, que desde el 30 de Enero de 2001, entró en vigencia el Tratado de la Haya en lo referente al sistema del APOSTILLE, el cual reemplaza la Legalización de Documentos en nuestras sedes consulares.
